About the event
Open Clinic
The colt starting clinic will focus on practical and basic things people can do to get their horse started under saddle in a way that is safe for both the horse and the rider. Reuben will show how he starts colts from the ground as well as from horseback. The basic concept that will be taught is focused on how to get your horse thinking, focused on you and set up to make sound decisions that are in line with what you want even when the horse is experiencing stress. The clinic is open to six participants with horses that are not yet started. The participants will take an active role in starting their horses under Reuben's direction. Ideally, for the sake of time and ensuring everyone gets the most out of this clinic, participant horses should have a basic understanding of the halter and not be troubled by past experiences. Working with troubled horses is for another clinic 🙂. Reuben will help participants walk through steps and methods that he has used over the past 15 years starting colts. Reuben's methods aren't original but if you like the methods taught by legendary horseman Ray Hunt, Martin Black and Buck Branaman, you should appreciate much of Reuben's approach.
